What is Evolution?

The word “evolution” originates from the Latin word for unrolling or revealing, but the concept has had a variety of meanings since it took form in the fields of science and in other fields. Early evolutionists such as Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predestined to evolve into a different species. Etienne Geoffroy St-Hilaire was Lamarck’s embryologist pupil who coined the term “transmutation” to describe this idea. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, challenged the concept of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy’s student.

In recent years, evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process that occurs when living organisms develop traits that increase their chances of survival or ability to reproduce offspring. Over time this genetic variation can cause the emergence of entirely new physical or biological traits in the same population. Natural selection is the process that drives the majority of evolutionary changes. However other changes that are not genetic, such as the increase in muscle mass from diet or exercise cannot be considered examples of evolution since they’re not inherited by the next generation.

Creationists make the argument that evolution is controversial even though it has been proven accurate by thousands of scientific tests and that it has been tested over time. They claim that the concept should not be taught in schools. In South Korea, creationists won a few victories over evolution in textbooks for high schools. This includes the removal of references about the evolutionary origins for humans as well as Archaeopteryx which is a feathered dinosaur believed to be the ancestor of birds.

The YECs are the best known form of creationist, and they believe that God created the universe in the exact way described in the Bible. They believe that the biblical account of the first six days of creation is literal and that the universe and the life on Earth were created just recently.

OECs may be less popular however their beliefs are as passionate like those of YECs. OECs believe that the universe and Earth are billions-of-years old and that evolution is a myth.

Both kinds of creationism deny the scientific theories that biogenesis and natural selection could explain how life came to be on Earth. They claim that evolution is inconceivable because it would require miracles. The pioneers of modern science shunned miracles out of fear they might lose their credibility.

Some creationists accept naturalistic evolution and special creation. They refer to their belief as “theistic evolution.” This is also referred to as “continuous evolutionism” or the “evolution of created kinds.” In this theory, God creates the original species, and then allows them to evolve over time. Then these evolutionary changes will produce new species that are identical to the original species.

Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the universe in one event called the Great Flood. These creationists believe that the original species were all created simultaneously, and that they evolved slowly afterward. They deny the notion of abiogenesis and assert that self-replicating life cannot arise from non-living matter.

In general, creationists oppose teaching evolution in schools. This is supported by a myriad of professional associations which include the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education, the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. However, some scientists and educational institutions are more flexible, and allow for the inclusion of creationism and evolution in their curricula.

What exactly is Creationism in Korea?

When people think of creationism, they often think of the United States. However, South Korea is also the home of an anti-evolutionist movement. The publishers of textbooks for high school students have recently declared that they will be removing references to evolution from their editions. A group called the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) is an unofficial body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research which is the driving force behind the campaign. The STR has won its first victory by removing from textbooks the evidence of the evolution and ancestor of the avian, the Archeopteryx. It is now focusing on removing snippets of Darwin’s notorious finch research as well as on human evolution too.

STR claims to have the support of 4000 families and individuals. Its goal is to weed out what it sees as the “atheist materialism” that paints an unhopeful worldview for students. It also hopes to combat the influence of American creationists in the country. A survey of students in biology revealed that a majority of them did not believe in evolution. The reasons for this are not clear however, they could be related to religion and the absence of full-time creation scientists across the country.

The KACR has achieved a lot through its lectures and seminars in the past. It publishes a bimonthly magazine, evolutionkr.Kr Creation, and has published books. The most notable of these is a text on the natural sciences, with an evolutionary perspective that sparked interest in college communities. In 1991, a professor and minister began teaching Creation Science in one university, and it continues to be taught until today.

On August 6 and 7, 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. The event was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six lecturers from the world, including ICR’s John Morris, Duane Gish and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of over a thousand. KACR members and KACR have also given talks on the subject of creation science at major seminaries. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center.
